The web series has devastated the world, but their revolution in India is on a completely different level.
All over the world, the creation of web series has ignited excitement, mainly because people have immediate access to new content not only locally but internationally as well.
But in India, web series are being lauded for something else- effectively bridging the industry's major loopholes. And these were not just any shortcomings. They were serious issues that have plagued the development of the industry for many years.
Some of the most obvious problems, which have not been completely eliminated, then at least partially solved, are the problem of launching the right talent into the Indian film industry.
Thanks to the web series, we are now seeing local talent who were earlier ignored and marginalized in the Hindi film industry.
What Is The Web Series About?
The web series is the content of the OTT platform. The revenue model of the OTT platform is subscription based. This means that every new OTT platform competing in the market is trying to market itself on the basis of its good content. The better and more acclaimed the content is, the more people will subscribe to it to see its exclusive originals.
This means that, in order to create a better web content, you need a better quality script with a bofo ending, a better cast that is capable of delivering better performance.
So, naturally, the selection process of OTT platforms, be it the script or the cast, is at the top. You can't expect to see anything less than this.
This is the reason why so many new faces are coming forward and they are getting equal opportunity to show their skills regardless of their background or appearance. This is why so many new writers are able to share daring new stories and scripts, the kind of scripts that were often rejected for big screen movies.
Hence, only the best actors and actors, who are really talented and can actually act, get selected for the web series.
Hope For Talent
So, one thing that is clear is this: OTT runs on talent, which means that unlike films, web series casting is free from nepotism.
So, it is no big secret that actors in India are struggling to get roles in web series. And by bustle, we mean improving their acting skills and/or their portfolio, not just improving their networking skills and ability to make contacts.
Once you get the role of a web series, all you need is real talent to move forward.
In such a situation, if someone wants to cast in a web series, then how will he do it. How can an actor in India find the right role that ultimately brings him into the limelight?
Since getting cast in a web series depends on just one factor, great acting skills, you may want to maximize this one skill. The surest way to get a role in a web series is to hone your skills.
While it is true that you don't need to be an actor's child and have amazing contacts since birth, one thing that is desirable to get roles in web series is a desirable portfolio.
Even the directors of web series are tired of casting amateur actors, and hence they prefer to cast actors who have some previous roles, not necessarily just in web series. A complete fresher is less likely to cast unlike actors who have at least some work that they can show.
So, the best course of action is to try to audition for as long as you can. Ask your agent to send your portfolio to as many casting agents and coordinators as possible.
Working in web series is also a great option for actors who have gained some experience in acting, and want to move on to better roles. Such actors are at an advantage over complete amateurs, as casting directors for web series usually select actors based on their previous work.
If you've done quite well despite doing a few works in the past, you may actually have a good, even better chance of working in a web series.
If you are a fresher, be open to even small roles, as you will have to start somewhere. As we said, people with acting experience have a higher chance than absolute beginners. Once you have worked in even small roles, then you can start building your portfolio.
Most importantly, never stop improving your craft. Enroll in theater, attend acting workshops, record your own performances and critique those reels.
