How To Become A Child Actor For Netflix - Modelfactory

The Beast That Is Netflix

I spend more time watching Netflix than my boyfriend. Netflix has become a household name, a code word for sex, and an entire lifestyle. Needless to say, this is a big deal.

In terms of casting, Netflix gets brownie points for being open to unfamiliar names and faces. Netflix produces and distributes a vast amount of diverse, interesting, unique and game-changing series and films. This means more opportunities for diverse, interesting, unique and game-changing actors! Aziz Ansari, Juan Pablo Raba, Alison Brie, Kristen Ritter, Taylor Schilling, Travis Fimmel, Claire Foy, Michelle Dockery, Britt Marling, Stephen Amell. Maybe I can stay there.

To these actors, it's not like Netflix with a six-pack at their house said, "Hey dude, we like your style, wanna be on our show?"

Vanessa Kirby's Audition

Vanessa Kirby talks about her experience auditioning for The Crown. If you haven't seen it already, this The Crown is a Netflix essential viewing! Kirby says he originally auditioned for a different role, and hasn't heard anything back. Not long after, she was talking to a friend who had been cast for the role of Margaret. This friend mentioned that they still haven't found 'the one'. Then Kirby thought, "That's because it's me!" He immediately called up his agent and said that he has to go for the role. Less and behold, 2 weeks later, she had a role.

Claire Foy's Audition

While we're on the topic of The Crown, Claire Foy has spoken at length about her experience auditioning for the leading role of Queen Elizabeth II. When she was five months pregnant she was sent the script by her agent and thought there was no way to get it. When she finally booked the gig, she had to make a decision about whether she'd be up for it after her baby.
kj apa audition

Riverdale star KJ Apa first auditioned for casting director David Rapaport, after missing out on a 12-hour flight with little time to prepare.

"I just came from New Zealand, and Riverdale was my first audition," Apa said. "So I remember going to the studio, auditioning with Dave, and it was nothing. Nothing really was there, nothing happened." Riverdale executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa joined K.J. Again, adding that "KJ read to us and he was immediately Archie Andrews. It was the perfect combination of honesty and edge. And he played guitar like a dream."

Aapa was better prepared for her audition this time by bringing her electric guitar with her. "There were some Southerners in the theater so I brought my guitar. I felt really confident after playing that song, because music really comes naturally to me and it's always something I'm really passionate about I've been."

Carmen Cuba's Audition

With two Emmy Awards under her belt, Carmen Cuban spoke with Deadline about casting the hit Netflix series, Stranger Things.

"We've opened it up to kids all over the world. We saw about 2,000 kids internationally, but we didn't make any open calls. We agreed that with the time constraints for shooting a TV show- Their first show, that they were going to write, direct and perform-probably the kids we were going to end up with were kids who had at least some experience. That's how we drew the line. In the end, in them Some were on Broadway at one time, and they each played at least one important role. Millie was in a BBC mini-series where she was unreliable; Finn [Wolford] had an arc on a TV show , so none of them were inexperienced."

OK, enough case studies. Behind all these actors was the experience of training, agents and auditions. It was not pure luck. So how do you get into the position where you're ready for the audition room?

How To Get Into The Netflix Audition Room

  1. get the goods
  2. Shoreel/Demoril
  3. head shot
  4. CV/Resume - You'll need some experience, even if it's just unpaid work or filled with drama school productions.
  5. Without these things you will not be taken seriously in this mutilated industry. It's sad, but true.

Get An Agent

There are a lot of actors in the world right now, so it's almost impossible to get an audition without an acting agent or manager. Casting directors don't have time to search through thousands of reels, headshots, and CVs.

You'd be rich if you had every time Stagemilk told you to 'get an agent', but we say that because it's true. Getting any agent, or representation of any kind, will take you one step further. It will open you up to more possibilities. But signing with a top-tier agent will definitely get you in the room for more frequent and bigger gigs. Having said that, there are ways around it. If you have a CV with a great reel, delicious headshots, and some credits, you can make your way across the room. Just make sure it's worth it. there's nothing worse than seeing you sweet-talking a major casting director, and then bombarding your audition or not being true to your part. Choose and make your battles count, like a true Viking. I'll see you in Valhalla.

Do Your Research

And that's where I direct you to iMDB pro. Read up on your favorite shows. Know which casting directors worked on it. Research actors, and find their agents. So much data now in your hot, sweaty, desperate little hands.

Also, subscribe to The Hollywood Reporter. They post daily news about film, TV and business. If you can stay up to date with the big players in the industry, you won't be thrown off when you find yourself auditioning for them.

Be Ready

If you manage to audition for a Netflix movie or series, you better be prepared. Here we talk in more depth about audition preparation.

Master Your Accent

If an accent is needed, make sure you brush up on that accent so you feel confident. The last thing you want to think about is your pronunciation. Do a thorough vocal warmup before your audition, and spend some time getting comfortable with the pronunciation before going in.

Know Your 'Type'

Don't belittle yourself for a role. Whatever happens, think big! We recently put together an article on how to understand your type and use it to your advantage (but also how to ignore it).

Take A Risk!

You can practice this in daily life. And if you do that you will become a really attractive, interesting person. I always talk about what makes people sexy (mainly because I'm single and a little desperate) but that's because I really believe that risk takers are very attractive. And casting directors are humans too; They look for these qualities in actors. don't believe me? Here's Margot Robbie to support me:

"In my mind I was like, 'You have literally 30 seconds left in this room and nothing will come of it if you don't do something impressive. This is your chance of a lifetime, just take it.' And so I start yelling at him and he's yelling at me. And that's really scary. I can barely keep up.

And he ends it by saying, 'You should be happy to have a husband like me. Now come here and kiss me.' So I walked very close to her face and then I was like, 'Maybe I should kiss her.' When and when will I get a chance to kiss Leo DiCaprio?'

But another part of my brain clicks and I just go, weird! I hit him in the face. And then I scream, 'Fuck you!' And that's not in the script at all. The room fell silent and I froze."

Are You Ready To Audition For Netflix?

So that's how you go down the road to audition for a Netflix show. But, are you ready for it?

First impressions are everything in the entertainment industry, and it is essential that you come prepared and confidently approach each occasion. It's a nerve-wracking experience and you want to walk into that room and do the best you can. I auditioned for Netflix just a week after graduating drama school, and boy did I wish I had more time! I was ready, but nervous as hell and also very green. That's fine though, I got several more chances from that casting director, so I clearly didn't mind too much!

My point is, if you're not ready yet, what are the steps you need to take to build up that confidence and strengthen your skills? Do you need to do more research, learn more about the casting process, work on your US accent (or whatever), do more training, or go to drama school? If you are reading this article and you are still in high school and have never auditioned in your whole life, I suggest you build some experience before aiming straight for the big guns! Sign up for acting classes, read plays, read scripts, go to casting workshops. Do whatever you need to do so that when you walk into that audition room you feel more than ready. Opportunities will come when you are ready.

How To Contact Netflix

This paragraph will not be long. Simple answer: No. Do not contact Netflix. I guarantee 1000% that sending an email to info@netflix.com will not get you an audition. Netflix does not arrange auditions for its content from its head office. Netflix works with production companies, who then hire casting directors, and they are in charge of casting each production. So if you email info@netflix.com about auditions for Riverdale, you won't get a response.

Pay less attention to cold emails or knocking on closed doors halfway across the world. Instead put your energy into becoming a great actor, with lots of training under your belt and great competition by an agent or manager.Don't know where to start?

If you're serious about achieving this goal of getting auditions for Netflix, it all starts with putting in the work. You have to do as good as you can at acting so that when that opportunity comes you can knock it out of the park. If you are willing to work and get on the train with us.
